Your Inheritance

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
— Galatians 5:1

Hello Bride of Christ,

Jesus, the word of God made flesh, makes all who believe in Him free from the law of sin and death. God addressed freedom from sin and death in His first conversation with man, setting man’s life foundation from earth to eternity (Genesis 2:16-17). Adam, the first man God conversed with did not comprehend the value of freedom. Instead, Adam stood watching the unfolding conversation between his beloved and the serpent. Adam ate the fruit exchanging freedom for bondage. Liberty for sin. Life for death. Home for exile.

Jesus speaking with Christ-believing Jews addresses the same topic of freedom and sin. He states, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32) The Jews ask Jesus to clarify, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, you will be made free?” (John 8: 33) Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.” (John 8:34 -35) Adam experienced this firsthand when he ate the fruit. He sinned. God put him out of his house, the garden.

Fast forward a few years, and Paul’s letter to the Galatians discusses freedom and sin. He reminds the Galatians, “It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) The Galatians lost sight of freedom. They placed restrictions and obligations on themselves not intended by God. Their pursuit of spirituality and holiness based on their own efforts led to enslavement. Paul draws attention toward Christ. Christ sets us free. Christ gives freedom. It is our inheritance.

Bride of Christ, do you find yourself entangled with sin? Do you feel trapped with a heavy heart? Do you trade freedom for slavery? Sin entered the garden through one man, Adam, but it was also vanquished by one man, Jesus! Bride of Christ and child of God take heart, Jesus’ closing remarks to the Christ-believing Jews live on and apply to you! Jesus said, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

Stand firm.

Learn from Adam.

Do not stand and watch passively. Choose to know God’s thoughts on topics. The word of God is living and active the writer of Hebrews tells us (Hebrews 4:12). Create pockets in your day to read His word, the Bible. Dig deep. Jesus desires to reveal Himself. He purposefully exchanged His freedom for ours emptying Himself, becoming like man, and obeying God to the point of death on the cross all for us to experience freedom!

Learn from the Jews.

Stand firm and converse with God.

Ask Him for clarity.

Pray.

When you struggle with scripture, or a verse speaks to you, pray. He promises to those who ask to answer, to those who seek to reveal, and to those who knock to open. Stand firm in freedom. The Son came to set us free, and whomever the Son sets free shall be free indeed!
