“Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.” 2 Samuel 6:14

Hello Bride of Christ,

When was the last time you danced before the Lord with all your might? Have you ever danced before the Lord with all your might? This type of dancing is not an ordinary following the choreography or keeping the rhythm of the music dance. It is a full body, soul, spirit expression where every fiber of your being is focus on God.

Focused on His goodness.

Focused on His character.

Focused on pleasing Him.

Focused on giving thanks to Him.

Focused on His glory.

King David in 2 Samuel chapter 6 is working on bringing the ark of the covenant, God’s presence, The Lord of Hosts, back to Jerusalem. He gathers all the choice men of Israel to bring this ark back to its rightful place. The text tells us everything seemed to be going well. All the house of Israel was playing music before the Lord on all different types of instruments. Right there in the midst as the people progressed an ox slipped, a man named Uzzah instinctively puts out his hand to catch the ark from falling, an error which he paid with his life. God’s anger was aroused towards Uzzah and struck him for this error and hence he dies.

King David, like many of us would have responded, becomes angry with the Lord because of His outbreak against Uzzah. King David quickly moves from anger to fear. He feared death would come to him if he brought the ark to his city. So being human, self-preserving, David has the ark taken to Obed-Edom. The text tells us the ark was there for three months, and while it resided there the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household. Again, being human and desiring blessing, David sends for the ark. David is no longer angry or fearful but filled with gladness.

David’s gladness was so overwhelming that he danced. The text says he danced with all his might! He was leaping and whirling. People were shouting along with the sound of the trumpet. As you read the text you get the sense there was great joy in the air. The energy was high and people, especially King David were beside themselves with joy inexpressible.

After experiencing great joy, King David comes home to be greeted by his wife Michal. Note, she had been watching from the window, and this is what she had to say, “How glorious was the king of Israel today uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maid servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” (2 Samuel 6: 20) Although she was reprimanding David for his behavior and desiring him to feel ashamed for not behaving like a king according to the world standards, David responds, “It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all is house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore, I will play music before the Lord. And I will be even more undignified than this and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.” (2 Samuel 6:21-22)

Bride of Christ, are the opinions of those closest to you holding you back from dancing before the Lord and thanking Him for choosing you before the foundations of the world? Are the opinions of others distracting you from focusing on God during the times He is calling you to worship Him and love Him with all your body, soul, and spirit? King David, who because he was King, always had people watching him to critique, to follow, and to discover faults knew that their eyes and opinions did not matter. King David knew everything he has was because of the Lord, for it was the Lord that chose him. The natural response to understanding everything we are, we have, and we will ever become from the Lord is to dance with all our might. Dance focused on God and God alone. Dance in the rhythm of gratitude with a heart of humility. Dance Bride of Christ, for the Lord of Hosts has chosen you!
